In Progression: Notes to Nodes, SMUCO and SMU Symphonia celebrates today’s increasingly digital world with the debut of the symphony, Paper, in a rare union of oriental and occidental orchestras.
The opus is commissioned by award-winning composer and music director of two National Day Parades, Mr Eric James Watson. It depicts the making of the humble sheet in three dazzling movements: Papyrus, The Mill, and Steam – Electricity – Beyond.
Featuring the spectacular auditory climax in the final movement of the symphony with both orchestras and conductors performing together in perfect harmony.
SMUCO is a Chinese Orchestra dedicated to promoting the appreciation of Chinese music through new audience experiences and performing concepts, such as the fusion with jazz and martial arts. SMUCO is under the baton of Mr Quek Ling Kiong, the resident conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
SMU Symphonia is an accomplished wind and strings symphony led by conductor Mr Adrian Chiang. The band regularly performs at local and overseas events, including international music festivals. Its music enrichment programme provides rare opportunities for its members to participate in overseas exchange with other bands.
