SMU Ivory Keys is SMU’s resident piano ensemble. Formed in 2007 by enthusiasts who share a passion for piano music, the club aspires to build a community of pianists who are committed to achieving musical understanding and artistic excellence, and to sharing its music with people from all walks of life. Kendrick Lim is the Festival Ambassador for SMU Ivory Keys.
When I’m not playing the piano, you can find me at:
Kendrick: SMU’s School of Economics
I feel instantly reFRESH!ed with a cup of:
Kendrick: Kopi peng siew dai (Iced coffee with less sugar).
The first thing that comes to mind about FRESH! is:
Kendrick: Kendrick: KOPI XIU DAI (coffee less sugar)! I always turn to coffee whenever I need to feel FRESH again. The aroma from the coffee also wakes me up and enhances my creativity!
SMU Ivory Keys is FRESH! to me because:
Kendrick: Playing the piano has always been my passion. What sparked my interest was how the piano could produce different kinds of sound and music. You can portray feelings such as happiness, sadness or even anger just by changing a few keys on the piano. It was also a special ‘tool’ for expressing my thoughts and emotions.
Tell us what’s FRESH! about SMU Ivory Keys’ performance at SMU Arts Festival 2016.
Kendrick: Imagine two people conversing with each other. Now substitute that with two pianos. In Klaviesta! 2016, you’ll hear duets that sound as though the pianos are talking to one another – one sentence after another, or one musical phrase followed by another. At some parts, it may even feel as though the pianos are ‘arguing' with each other! We’re also staging a wider variety of piano pieces, such as British Folk music, which is something we haven’t done before. So do come down and support us!
“KLAVIESTA! 2016” will be happening on Mon 29 Aug at 7.00 pm at the Esplanade Recital Studio.
