SMU Symphonia has grown from a small ensemble in 2003 to become a full-fledged wind and string symphony. The band’s rapid development is a tribute to the relentless pursuit of excellence by passionate musicians, both past and present, as well as its core values of music, friends and fun. It has a music enrichment programme that includes overseas exchange with wind bands and participation in international band festivals. The Festival Ambassador for SMU Symphonia is Rachel Wong.
When I’m not playing music, you can find me at:
Rachel: SMU’s School of Information Systems.
I feel instantly reFRESH!ed with a cup of:
Rachel: Ice lemon tea.
The first thing that comes to mind about FRESH! is:
Rachel: Jasmine flowers.
Tell us why SMU Symphonia is FRESH! to you:
Rachel: I always had a passion for music. In SMU Symphonia, I can follow my passion and I am able to showcase it during performances. We are made up of people with the same interest and practice to get better at our art form.
Tell us something interesting about SMU Symphonia:
Rachel: SMU Symphonia does not only perform in local platforms, but we travel overseas to perform and bring the joy of music to many communities.
What is FRESH! about SMU Symphonia’s performance at SMU Arts Festival 2016?
Rachel: For our performance, we will be collaborating with SMU Chamber Choir as part of their 10th year anniversary to bring an original aural spectacular called “In The Heart of the Musical”. In the performance, the audience will be seated next to, and around the performers, as the title suggests, with the performers playing next them to achieve a 360-degree, “surround sound” experience. This is unlike the conventional performance where the performers will be in front of the audience. We have timeless classics from “Les Misérables” lined up for you and the musical will definitely immerse you in the joys of music.
What is your main aim at this year’s SMU Arts Festival?
Rachel: To perform at the musical and to spread the word of SMU Symphonia to the SMU community and public!
SMU Symphonia’s “In The Heart of the Musical” will be held on 15th September at 8pm-8:30pm at Festival Stage @ SMU U-Square.
